International Day of Persons with Disabilities falls on 3rd of December each year, with the aim of promoting empowerment, and helping to create real opportunities for Persons with disabilities. This year Kenya marked the National event in Makueni County and all the other 47 counties celebrated this day. Theme for 2019 is “Promoting the participation of Persons with Disabilities and their leadership: taking action on the 2030 Development Agenda, Kenya has adopted “Leave No One Behind” as the Theme for this year this has the rallying call for to achieve the seven sustainable goals. The theme emphasizes and ensures that all persons with disabilities contribute to the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals. The theme further resonates well with the mandate of the Council as provided for in the Persons with Disabilities Act 2003.

By this Act, the Council was established in 2004 with the mandate to promote inclusion of persons with disabilities and mainstream disability in all sectors.

The National Council for Persons with Disabilities is a state corporation established by an Act of Parliament; the Persons with Disabilities Act No. 14 of 2003 and set up in November 2004.

The Council representation is drawn from key government Ministries and organizations of/for persons with disabilities.
