CELEBRATING INTERNATIONAL ALBINISM AWARENESS DAY IN MOMBASA
Introduction
The National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), in collaboration with stakeholders, successfully commemorated International Albinism Awareness Day (IAAD) at the Mombasa Mama Ngina Waterfront on 13th June 2024.
Theme and Significance
This year’s theme, “10 Years of IAAD: A Decade of Collective Progress,” highlighted the remarkable achievements made in supporting Persons with Albinism (PWAs) over the past decade. The NCPWD remains dedicated to empowering PWAs to lead fulfilling lives.
NCPWD Initiatives for PWAs
The report highlights several key NCPWD initiatives that directly benefit PWAs:
- Sunscreen Support: 3,800 PWAs have received sunscreen lotions to safeguard their skin from the sun’s harmful rays.
- Cancer Screening: Regular cancer screenings are conducted for PWAs to enable early detection and treatment.
- Education Scholarships: 88 scholarships have been awarded to PWAs for the current academic year, promoting access to education.
