Commemoration of International Day of Persons with Disabilities in Turkana County

The International Day of Persons with Disabilities was vibrantly commemorated at the Moi Gardens Stadium in Turkana County, serving as a powerful testament to the region’s advancing journey toward total inclusivity. The event was the result of a seamless collaborative effort, spearheaded by the National Council for Persons with Disabilities in partnership with the County Government of Turkana and a diverse array of stakeholders dedicated to social justice.

This year’s celebrations were centered on the theme, “Fostering disability-inclusive societies for advancing social progress.” This theme highlighted the critical milestones achieved in integrating disability inclusion within the broader framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Representing the Council, Director Freddah Lenaiyasa reaffirmed a steadfast dedication to this cause, emphasizing that the Council’s strategy relies heavily on robust partnerships and the rigorous implementation of government policies specifically designed to safeguard the rights and enhance the welfare of persons with disabilities.

The significance of the day was further bolstered by national-level support. Mr. Nicholas Kitua, representing the Cabinet Secretary for Labour and Social Protection, reiterated the national government’s vow to maintain inclusive programming. A cornerstone of this commitment is the diligent implementation of the Disability Act of 2025, which serves as a legislative backbone for protecting the interests of the community at both the national and grassroots levels.

At the county level, Governor Hon. Jeremiah Lomorukai (Napotikan) delivered a landmark address that outlined concrete actions for the residents of Turkana. The Governor pledged to systematically incorporate persons with disabilities into all county government programs, ensuring that no individual is left behind in the pursuit of essential support. In a significant policy win, he announced the passing of a dedicated disability fund and confirmed that the county would continue to provide free medical assessments for all persons with disabilities seeking official registration within Turkana County.

The success of the event was amplified by the presence and support of key international and local development partners. Organizations such as UNICEF, the World Food Programme (WFP), Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB), UNDPK, KISE, and CBM stood alongside local stakeholders to emphasize a shared community vision. Their participation underscored a collective resolve to build a society where disability inclusion is not just an aspiration, but a functional reality for every citizen.
