Council consultative meeting with the Kenya Disability Parliamentary Association (KEDIPA)

The Council held a consultative meeting with the Kenya Disability Parliamentary Association (KEDIPA) to identify various areas of collaboration.
KEDIPA is a caucus of Parliamentarians – both Senate and National Assembly with disabilities, those with family members with disabilities as well as any other Parliamentarian interested to join. The caucus pushes for disability-related agenda in Parliament through consolidating voices to push for motions and bills that foster disability inclusion.
The KEDIPA members present included Hon Tim Wanyonyi (MP Westlands and also KEDIPA’s Chairperson), Hon. Martin Pepela (MP, Webuye East), Hon. Crystal Asige (Nominated Senator), Hon. Yusuf Hassan Abdi (MP, Kamukunji), Hon. George Mbugua (Nominated Senator) and Hon. Bishop Emeritus Jackson Koskei (Nominated MP).
The Council led by Executive Director Harun Hassan agreed to collaborate with KEDIPA in lobbying for disability legislative issues such as the pending Persons with Disabilities (Amendment) Bill 2021 and County Governments (Amendment) Bill 2021. In particular, the County Governments Bill currently at the House’s Legal Department, intends to ensure that a county assembly ONLY qualifies as fully constituted if they have nominated MCAs representing persons with disabilities.
Other areas of collaboration include amplifying disability topics on the floor of the House, bringing on board voices of Disabled Persons Organisations (DPOs) and engage with Council’s Disability Services Officers at the constituency level.
