Council Meeting with the new Cabinet Secretary for Labour and Social Protection

The Council held a meeting with the new Cabinet Secretary for Labour and Social Protection Hon. Florence Bore in her office.
The team, led by Executive Director Harun Hassan, presented various issues that need the Cabinet Secretary’s immediate attention. These include:
i. Enactment of the Persons with Disabilities (Amendment) Bill 2021 that is currently at the Senate.
ii. NCPWD’s budgetary challenges amid great demand of services, and delays in disbursement of funds from the Exchequer
iii. Finalization of subsidiary laws on disability to complement the Act e.g. the National Disability Policy and review of relevant regulations.
iv. Lobbying for the principle of universal design in Kenya’s transport infrastructure, with a specific focus on the Expressway’s hindering persons with disabilities’ access to NCPWD’s HQ offices.
On the new registration system, the Cabinet Secretary was also briefed on the progress made including the decentralization of the Director of Medical Services signature to counties, and efforts made to curb fraud and generate accurate socioeconomic data.
The Council also presented a costed brief of the Kenya Kwanza’s commitments for persons with disabilities as enshrined in its manifesto. Hon. Bore pledged to walk with the Council to champion issues touching on the welfare of persons with disabilities in Kenya.
