NCPWD Executive Director Harun Hassan meets with Kakamega County Governor H.E. Wycliffe Oparanya EGH.

Mr. Hassan thanked the governor for his leadership in promoting the wellbeing of persons with disabilities in the county. Leading by example, he has tasked Dr. Phitalis Were Masakhwe, a person with disability to be the Chief Officer of a crucial docket -Service Delivery and Advisory Unit.

 

Mr. Hassan was also informed of the county’s disability survey done which found 49,000 PWDs, two thousand above the census and Council’s data, highlighting the need for partnership with county governments in registration of PWDs at the county level.

In addition to this, the Kakamega county government has also allocated Sh60 million for persons with disabilities’ programmes. It invited the Council to work together on identifying priority programmes for PWDs in Kakamega. A county disability act is also being developed.

The Council also requested for the waiver of the medical charges for disability assessments at the Kakamega county health facilities, and pushing the disability agenda in the counties through Governor Oparanya’s respectable role in the Council of Governors.

Governor Oparanya affirmed the County’s commitment on matters disability, and invited the Council to develop and formalise an MOU to ease collaboration and delivery of services.
