Training of disability medical assessment and categorization guidelines developed by MOH.

The Council and the Ministry of Health (MOH) begun the training of county referral hospital disability medical assessment teams on the new disability medical assessment and categorization guidelines developed by MOH.

This trainings got support from the Council of Governors (COG), CBM International, Light For The World and KCB Bank Kenya Ltd.

The exercise, took place in Nakuru, Kisumu and Mombasa concurrently which saw over 40 counties from across the country attending, with a virtual option for those unable to be physically present. The trained health workers will be the Trainers of Trainees (ToTs) for other assessment teams in their counties with technical support provided by the health ministry.

This is ahead of the official decentralization of the Director of Medical Services signature from Afya House Nairobi to the county directors of health – bringing this important service closer to the people.

The trainings were officially opened by Chairperson Peter Muchiri, who hailed the exercise as a promising step in the right direction as far as easing service delivery to persons with disabilities in Kenya is concerned.

Executive Director Harun Hassan lauded all relevant stakeholders and partners for their contribution in rolling out the trainings – which are in line with implementing the Presidential directives on the new registration system. The Council will also work with COG to appeal to county governments to waive the cost of disability medical assessments as requested by the President during the International Day of Persons with Disabilities last year.

Dr Ogato who addressed Mombasa team on the second day commented that the registration of persons with disabilities at the counties via the new system has been informed by the Ministry of Health’s new disability assessment and Categorization guidelines. These guidelines have been designed to standardize the disability assessment process across the country. Once these guidelines are fully rolled out through the training of medics, the Director of Medical Services (DMS) signature will be fully devolved to the County Director of Health. He promised the ministry commitment in the whole process of official decentralization of the Director of Medical Services signature from Afya House Nairobi to the county directors of health – bringing this important service closer to the people.
