EXPRESSION OF INTEREST FOR KENYA SIGN LANGUAGE TRAINING

The National Council for Persons with Disabilities is a State Corporation established under the Persons with Disabilities Act No. 14 of 2003 to champion for the rights of Persons with Disabilities in Kenya. Section 33 (1) d of the Act mandates the Council to provide or contribute to the cost of assistive services. To this end, the Council has been training public officers in basic Kenya Sign language to improve access to public services by the Deaf.

Further, to enhance reasonable accommodation, all Government ministries, Counties, departments and agencies (MCDAs) are encouraged to employ/train sign language interpreters to enhance and support service delivery to the deaf clients.

The Council therefore invites MCDAs to nominate two employees to undertake training in Basic Kenya Sign language. The training programme is run in collaboration with the Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE) in 8 centres around the Country. The Centres are: Nairobi, Isiolo, Kakamega, Kisii, Kitui, Nakuru, Kisumu and Mombasa.

The Council will pay tuition fees for two nominees from nominating MCDAs. However, MCDAs are encouraged to nominate and pay tuition fees for more employees to quickly build their capacity to effectively deliver services to the Deaf. NGOs and the private sector institutions are also invited to nominate and support their staff to acquire these important skills.

APPLICATION FOR THE TRAINING.

Nominees can visit the Council website www.ncpwd.go.ke to apply for the training. Selection of trainees for support by the Council will be conducted on 9th  February 2024. Successful applicants will be expected to process their Study leave and release from their employer so as to start classes on 4th March 2024.

MCDAs RESPONSIBILITY
