EXPRESSION OF INTEREST FOR KENYA SIGN LANGUAGE TRAINING
The National Council for Persons with Disabilities is a State Corporation established under the Persons with Disabilities Act No. 14 of 2003 to champion for the rights of Persons with Disabilities in Kenya. Section 33 (1) d of the Act mandates the Council to provide or contribute to the cost of assistive services. To this end, the Council has been training public officers in basic Kenya Sign language to improve access to public services by the Deaf.
Further, it is a fundamental requirement that all Government ministries, Counties, departments and agencies (MCDAs) to have sign language interpreters to support service delivery to the deaf.
The Council therefore invites MCDAs to support their employees to undertake training in Basic Kenya Sign language. The training programme is run in collaboration with the Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE) in 8 centres around the Country. The Centres are: Nairobi, Isiolo, Kakamega, Kisii, Nyeri, Nakuru, Kisumu and Mombasa. The duration of the training is expected to run for six months Part time and Four Months for full time students.
APPLICATION FOR THE TRAINING.
To apply for the training, interested applicants can visit the Council website www.ncpwd.go.ke and fill the application form ………. Selection of trainees who will be supported by the Council will be conducted in the month of December 2024. The training is scheduled to commence in 13TH January 2025.
The Council will pay tuition fees for two nominees from nominating MCDAs. However, MCDAs are encouraged to nominate and pay tuition fees for more emploees to quickly build their capacity to effectively deliver services to the Deaf. NGOs and the private sector institutions are also invited to nominate and support their staff to acquire these important skills.
MCDAs RESPONSIBILITY
MCDAs will be required to give their employees study leave and any other support for their upkeep during the training period.
