International Wheelchair Day Celebration a Resounding Success in Migori County

This year’s International Wheelchair Day (IWD) celebration in Migori County proved to be a resounding success. Held in Kehancha-Migori, the event was a collaborative effort between the  Council and esteemed partners, including the Association for the Physically Disabled of Kenya (APDK), Hope Mobility Kenya (HMK), CBM, and the National Fund for the Disabled of Kenya (NFDK).

The presence of distinguished guests further elevated the significance of the occasion. Mr. Joseph Motari MBS, Principal Secretary for the State Department of Social Protection and Senior Citizen Affairs, graced the event as the Chief Guest. Migori County government’s Deputy Governor, Dr. Joseph Mahiri, served as the host. Members of Parliament, County Assembly representatives, and developmental partners also added their presence, underlining the importance of the event.

The celebrations were the culmination of a productive six-day period of pre-activities. These activities focused on improving the mobility of persons with disabilities (PWDs) in Migori County. Over 200 assistive devices were assessed, fitted, and distributed, directly impacting the lives of beneficiaries. Additionally, 1,000 tree seedlings were planted in two special schools, promoting environmental responsibility and fostering a greener future for all.

The event served as a platform for the Principal Secretary to reaffirm the government’s unwavering commitment to ensuring the inclusion of PWDs in all aspects of society. International Wheelchair Day serves as a yearly reminder to reflect on the progress made in removing barriers and addressing the need for mobility devices.

By working together, we can create a more inclusive and accessible future for everyone in Kenya.
